Appendix to Training Policy | Atrium Prison Counselling Service

Inductor Training guide

In Atrium Clinic forensic induction training is done through access to processes information, training face-to-face run by the prison, access to one-to-one training with the service manager and an inductor who is a practitioner working in the prison who is identified to support the inducting colleague (inductee) on the ground and to build their knowledge and competencies against the checklist in the training schedule. This schedule is the responsibility of the inductee to complete in terms of dates but the inductor ‘s feedback to the manager will be invited on the inductee’s progress too. You should follow the guide below and refer to the training schedule. Individuals working across sites may already be familiar with the training and may not have to redo all elements in accordance with agreement with the service manager.

For inductors

Please ensure that you are updating yourself to practices and link with service manager if there are queries. As an inductor you are supporting a peer to

  1. Learn the information they need for safe context- specific practice.
  2. Acquire the skills to deliver all aspects of the counselling service safely.
  3. Understand partner service expectations and how we work in a multidisciplinary context respectfully and supportively.
  4. Know where to go for further information and further support.
  5. Support them into the other training pathways Key talk, ACCT, internal suicide and self -harm protocols (manager) and further CORE training.
  • Recognise your inductee as a trained professional counsellor.
  • Support them to the requirements of the context.
  • Ask the inductee to reflect of their learning and invite them to summarise or use teach back to ensure knowledge is acquired.
  • Do not worry about repeating sections of the schedule if you or the inductee are not sure that competency in this task has been evidenced. The aim is to inform the practitioner’s knowledge first; ensure they understand processes that guide the work and then to reinforce through shadowed, safe practice
  • Ask open questions to facilitate learning based conversations and explore scenarios across contexts to ensure learning is focused to a range of situations.
  • Identify any limitations in the induction training period and the access to shadowed experience or theory to practice that could impact the ability of the individual to do the role.

By the end of the training induction,

  • Practitioners will send a completed induction training schedule back to the service manager to achieve sign-off for their training period to the local site.
  • Practitioners will be able to appropriately practice effectively in the forensic system with knowledge of the role of Atrium in the wider MDT.
  • Practitioners will be able to manage risk in the prison context of operation, follow processes to which they have been trained and complete the relevant S1 and CORE documentation to that requirement.
  • Practitioners will be able to know who and when to seek Case Management and Supervision support.
